Top Picks in a Sea of Practical Purses
The spring runways were awash with an abundance of fresh handbag styles during the Spring 2014 fashion shows, but perhaps the most exciting thing about this season's offerings was the sheer pragmatism that was inherent in the designs on offer. Longer length shoulder straps, carry-all totes, cross-body styles, and easy-access messenger bags all made an appearance on the runways, making it difficult for most handbag collectors to name a favourite.
Yet despite this abundance of choice, some of the most compelling new handbag choices out there were seemingly amalgamations of the more practical (and aforementioned) handbag styles. Sizes were large enough to fit lunch, a makeup bag, and a tablet, yet small enough to be worn across the body without risking fatigue to the shoulders and back. A closer look at some of these practical hybrids, reveal some clear favourites amongst the pack.
Chloe's cross-body handbags for Spring 2014 were and are, as always, an instant success. Contrasting leather panels were interspersed with texture and sleek, minimalistic hardware to give off a polished yet laid back look. The size is just enough to store something of consequence in, without having to revert to the giant, “it-bag” sized carryalls of seasons past.
American high street retailer J. Crew also has a nice offering this season in their Sophie cross-body bag. Just over a very messenger-bag size of one foot high and eight inches tall, the Sophie's sleek and clean lines wear well with just about any look, and have all the makings of an instant classic.
