We are all aware of the fact that it is illegal to sell fake handbags. Did you know that it will soon be illegal to buy fake handbags as well?
New York City Councilmember, Margaret Chin, is pushing for a new law that makes it illegal to buy counterfeit handbags. Chin states that it is very easy to spot a fake vendor. If the vendor is selling from a back room, a basement, or a van, the vendor most likely is not legitimate. She compared counterfeit selling to drug dealing–in that, both of the goods are smuggled into the country and sold at an enormous profit. Chin’s legislation includes a $1000 fine and up to a year in jail for purchasing counterfeit handbags.
There is a high demand for counterfeit handbags because people want to look exquisite, but do not feel it is just to pay the ridiculous price tag. If you are in the market for one, you better hurry before this law is passed!
