Spring 2014 Handbag Report: Two Covetable Designer Brands
Change is upon us. Temperatures are warming, and fashionistas and retailers alike are turning their thoughts to the lighter, more vibrant sartorial choices that always surface with the first signs of spring. Spring trends this year encompass a wide variety of textures and pattern; pop prints, tribal batiks, cool metallics, and sports-inspired pieces all made appearances on this season's runways. One area in particular where designers’ newfound enthusiasm for texture and pattern was readily apparent was their handbag collections. Two classic design houses in particular really stood out from the pack this season: Hermes and Louis Vuitton.
Hermés, a storied brand with one of the most longstanding reputations for quality craftsmanship in the industry, managed to meld their jungle-inspired theme for Spring 2014 with their trademark refined high-quality leatherwork to create an elegant collection. Alligator clutches with contrast trim and brass accents stood out, as did soft, oversized shoulder bags in sumptuous leather and sturdy canvas. The look managed to achieve a rugged refinement that complemented the rich palette of the jungle prints, while playing on the natural textures that inspired the collection.
Also playing with texture was Louis Vuitton, who showed a collection of textured drawstring bucket bags in embossed and studded leather, alligator skin, and beaded, sequinned, and feathered velvet. The bucket shape is one that has not made an appearance on the scene since the 90s, and in its new incarnation, it looks fresh and modern against the backdrop of Vuitton's nouveau-bohemian collection.
