Spotlight on Nicholas Ghesquiére for Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton has long been a brand that is associated with luxury. Nowhere is this more evident than in its handbag collection; Louis Vuitton logo handbags that are as much as ten and twenty years old and in good condition are being sold for up to 75% of their retail value, and are still thought of as one of the most coveted brands on the market today.
This year, designer Nicholas Ghesuqiére has replaced Marc Jacobs as the creative director of Louis Vuitton, and his much-lauded collection of both ready-to-wear clothing and handbags were a resounding success at the Fall 2014 Paris shows.
Ghesquiére's collection was as refined and elegantly sophisticated as the brand's heritage would demand. Handheld satchels and luggage duffels in richly-pigmented croc skins were a huge hit, as were his subtle, 60's-inspired prints with geometric patterns over a refined, nude backdrop.
The standout item however, was the one that paid homage to the brand's roots. Ghesquiére recreated the brand's legendary steamer trunks on a miniature scale, right down to the very last detail. The result is a very detailed, and highly-covetable, cross-body box handbag that has already become the frontrunner at the top of fashion editor's “it bag” hit list. The tiny trunks have already been labelled as destined to become the latest addition to the Louis Vuitton gallery of covetable classic handbags; not bad for Ghesquiére's first effort out of the gate, and great news for those of us who might be looking to add to our collections of classic Louis Vuitton handbags.
